What Should You Consider When
Buying a Motorcycle Trailer?
Are you considering buying a used motorcycle trailer? There
are several things to consider before purchasing a motorcycle
trailer. First we should mention that we are referring to a
trailer which will be used to transport your motorcycle. Of
course there are also motorcycle trailers available for
towing behind your motorcycle. These are actually growing in
popularity each year with touring enthusiasts. We are going to
consider what type of utility style trailer would be right for
towing your motorcycle. Sometimes it can be difficult to
deciding which type of trailer will be right for your specific
use.
If you do a lot of cross country traveling in your main
vehicle and like to have you motorcycle with you during your
trip, then an enclosed motorcycle trailer would be good
for you. The enclosed trailer gives you the benefit of
protecting your motorcycle from the elements and from prying
eyes. The additional benefit is you can safely carry all your
off-road equipment safe and sound. There are several styles of
enclosed utility trailers that would serve well as a motorcycle
hauler. You just want to be sure you have ample room for tying
down your motorcycle and storing all your equipment. You will
find some with V or pointed fronts that are especially handy
for motorcycles. These usually will cost a bit more then
standard utility trailers. You should also try to find one with
a side door on the trailer. This is especially handy when you
want access to your equipment during a trip but do not want to
remove your bike.
The alternative type of trailer would be a standard flatbed
style similar to an open landscaping trailer. This type would
be less expensive but would leave your motorcycle out in the
elements. When traveling this way, you have to be cautious
about how you tie down your motorcycle and should periodically
check it for any tampering. The last thing you want is for you
to turn left and your precious motorcycle to go right.
Unfortunately, I've seen this happen on the interstates.
Personally speaking, this fact alone always moved me to suggest
spending a bit more and getting the added security of an
enclosed trailer.
You will find just about any type of utility trailer online
at great prices. You can always find deals from someone who no
longer has a need for their trailer or is looking to upsize.
Just be sure you have enough overall interior length to
accommodate your motorcycle when properly tied down for travel
whether you go with an open trailer or an enclosed trailer.
