What type of Boat Trailer is Right for
You?
In most cases, the size and type of boat trailer you need
will be governed by the type and size of boat you own. A
smart buyer will take his time looking for the correct boat
trailer for his boat. Just about any boat dealer and many
boating supply businesses sell new trailers. Having lived
on the New Jersey shore most of my life and being around boats
has given me a different perspective on boat owning then many
people. Many times you can get a special price on a new
trailer when you purchase a new boat. But if you purchase
a used boat, a good boat trailer isn't one of the highest
priorities on your list.
You will undoubtedly find good deals if you take the time to
search out a used boat trailer. From past experience, it
seems many boat trailers outlive their original boats.
For one reason or another, a boat owner will sell his boat
without the original trailer or upgrade a trailer for an
existing boat. In both cases, the owners are left with a
boat trailer that they no longer use. Most trailers have
various types of roller systems or padded support rails which
help loading and unloading of your boat. Be sure the
roller brackets are adjustable and can be moved according to
the shape of your boats hull. For best riding
characteristics, you want a nice fit of your boat to your
trailer.
A wise buyer will also want to be sure they have the proper
towing equipment on their tow vehicle to enable safe towing of
their new boat. A part of the used trailer which many
fail to consider is the wheels. Unlike most vehicles,
boat trailers are usually submerged in the water to a large
extent whenever loading or unloading their boats. That
water can seriously damage wheel bearings and brake assemblies
and this is especially true if the boat is regularly used in
salt water. Although road mileage might be very low and
the tires look new, the working parts might have taken a
beaten. But this is not the expensive problem that it
once was. As with most other products, you can find a
full variety of
trailer accessories and replacement parts online at a
decent discount.
Another important question to consider is how far will you
be towing your boat? Most boat owners only use their boat
trailers to haul their boat from their driveway to the local
body of water. Some boat owners will take their boats on
summer vacations with them out of state or across
country. Most boat trailers today are made from
galvanized steel and constructed with specific length boats and
weights in mind. So if long trips are in your future, be
sure to go heavy duty. Also remember that most trailers
will support their boats for off season storage in the driveway
for 7 to 10 months of the year.
In the old days, you were limited to the local newspaper
classifieds when searching for a boat trailer. But today,
anyone with internet access will be able to broaden their
search with no problem. You will find some excellent used
trailer buys on auction sites. You are guaranteed to find
truly motivated sellers and won't have to worry about playing
telephone tag trying to find sellers.
